From Trial to Adoption: Why Bremen Chose the AllTrec 8015F

Umweltbetrieb Bremen

Umweltbetrieb Bremen – A Cleaner Cut

With the AllTrec 8015F a fully electric equipment carrier was put to work this year for the first time in municipal green-space maintenance. The machine has proven itself and delivered a clear boost in environmental sustainability. Early worries about limited battery life turned out to be unfounded.

A tap on the joystick unfolds the three-part mower deck. René Lohaus powers up the e-motors for the seven blades, lowers the deck and moves off almost silently—only the blades can be heard. The carrier itself, an AllTrec 8015F from the Dutch manufacturer FPS-Electric B.V., uses electric drive for both traction and mowing. During the growing season the many lawns in his district have to be cut every three weeks.

Until last year a conventional municipal mower with a combustion engine handled the job, but it had grown old and needed replacing. When the depot was asked to test an electric carrier with an electric mower deck, neither depot manager Gerd Gloistein nor mowing specialist René Lohaus were thrilled. “We feared the mower wouldn’t last a full shift,” recalls Gerd Gloistein.

Unfounded Concerns

Those concerns quickly disappeared. Halfway through its first season, the team is delighted with the e-machine. “When I come back after a normal workday the batteries are still half-full,” says René Lohaus. Only on grass that hasn’t been cut for a while, and is therefore higher, does the powerful blade and drive system draw noticeably more energy.

Plenty of Power on Board

The staying power comes from a 67 kWh battery pack (a 50 kWh option is also available and, according to the manufacturer, still has enough power for a full mowing day). Besides the mower deck the carrier can accept attachments for weed control or leaf collection, making it a true multi-season machine.

Originally a 14-day trial was planned, but Gloistein felt that was too short to be meaningful. He suggested long-term rental for an entire season and then a decision. The verdict: buy the machine outright—it makes the city’s green-space maintenance noticeably cleaner and quieter.

A Wide Range of Duties

Umweltbetrieb Bremen is a municipal enterprise responsible for green-space maintenance. It also looks after playgrounds, the outdoor areas of kindergartens and schools, tree inspection and care, cemetery management, storm-water contracts and more. The work is coordinated from a headquarters and nine depots across the city. Depot Walle—managed by Gloistein with 12 staff—covers three districts stretching from downtown Bremen to the northern city limits, leading to some lengthy travel to job sites.

To maximise efficiency and runtime, the manufacturer uses a consistently direct-drive concept: both the drive wheels (the AllTrec 8015F is available with 2- or 4-wheel drive) and each of the seven blades are powered by their own electric motor, mounted directly on the wheels and blade shafts.

Lohaus especially appreciates the spacious cab. Compared with his previous mower he now has noticeably more room, with excellent all-round visibility.

A Win-Win Tool Carrier

The AllTrec 8015F has become a win-win for Umweltbetrieb Bremen: its zero-emission operation fits perfectly with the city’s environmental strategy, while its reliability and ergonomics meet the depot’s day-to-day demands.

Both Gloistein and Lohaus give it a firm thumbs-up: the driver has ample space for foul-weather gear and a cooler box, the all-round glazing boosts safety, and the battery capacity easily covers a full mowing day even with longer road journeys to distant green areas. At the end of the afternoon Lohaus parks the carrier in the shed and plugs it into the 16 A high-current socket to recharge.
