From Skepticism to Standard Practice: How Peab is Leading the Way in Fossil-Free Property Maintenance

Peab, one of the Nordic region’s largest construction and civil engineering companies, has taken bold steps toward fossil-free property maintenance.

A year into a groundbreaking project with Castellum, Peab’s transition to electric machinery is proving smoother, and more impactful, than expected.

Construction engineer Manfred Lidberg, who leads the project for Peab, admits he was skeptical at first. “I grew up on a farm, used to working with chainsaws and heavy diesel equipment. Replacing fossil fuel felt almost impossible.”

Just over a year later, he describes the change as “almost ordinary, simply because it works so well.”

AllTrec as a key solution

Among several electric machines in the pilot, the AllTrec tool carrier stood out. Its versatility throughout the seasons, strong battery life and comfortable cab even at -20°C impressed operators. “Reality matches the promise on paper better than with any other machine,” says Manfred.

This has led Peab to expand AllTrec’s use during winter operations, from snow clearing to sanding, with drivers reporting a significant improvement in working conditions thanks to low vibration and reduced noise.

Opportunities to refine

Manfred also sees room for improvement, mainly small design adjustments for Nordic winter conditions, and better data insights to raise efficiency. “Being able to track consumption and driver influence would help optimize energy use and raise awareness among operators,” he explains.

Breaking old habits

For Manfred, the biggest barrier is no longer technology, but mindset. “Don’t let old habits block progress. The earlier you start, the easier it gets.”

Peab believes that electrification is vital for both sustainability and work environment, and sees this project with Castellum as a way to accelerate change, not only within their own operations, but also among subcontractors inspired by the results.
